Chris Sanderson OBE

Chris assumed the appointment of Chairman of Cumbria Scout Council on 24 September 2015.

Chris was born in Ambleside and educated at Heversham Grammar School, where he was a Scout between 1967 and 1974.  Chris joined the Army in 1975 and was commissioned into the Intelligence Corps the same year.  He held senior intelligence and operational appointments, deploying to Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Germany, Hong Kong, the Balkans and Iraq. He was awarded an MBE in the 1st Gulf War Operational Honours list and retired as a Colonel in 2005.

Chris then joined Control Risks, a UK-based risk consultancy, where he was principally responsible for supporting the UK and other governments in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. He also served as a Director of British Expertise, the British overseas trade association, and was a member of a number of Government and industry bodies.  He was a Trustee for the Intelligence Corps Charity and a Fellow of the Security Institute.

Chris was the first Chairman of the Security in Complex Environments Group which partners the UK Government in the implementation of regulation for the UK private security industry operating overseas.  In 2013 Chris was elected a Board Director of the Geneva-based International Code of Conduct Association which works to encourage respect for human rights and higher professional standards across the global private security industry.  Chris was awarded an OBE in the 2015 New Year’s Honours List for his work in this field.

Chris returned to the Lake District in 2013 and lives near Glenridding, Ullswater.  He is a Trustee for the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Association and a Patron of the Lakeland Arts Trust. He is a keen sailor, skier, and fell-walker/runner.
