Solway Derwent – District Camp

27 June 2017

On the weekend of 16th – 18th June, in the lovely hot weather, over 100 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts from the Solway and Derwent area attended their annual District Camp held at Ratlingate campsite, near Carlisle.

Activities over the weekend included a mobile “Cavebus”, a caving tunnel built inside an old bus, and a giant inflatable obstacle course. This was alongside traditional favourites of campfire cooking and shelter building, in which many slept out on the Saturday night. Those attending the camp also had a chance to take part in archery, crate stacking and, for the first time, spear throwing.

“A big weekend event such as this allows the Scouts to take part in a far wider range of activities than can be completed in their regular weekly meeting” commented one of the camp leaders, Steve Dawson.  “The chance to meet and take part with those of different ages, and from different groups all adds to the event, and is a vital part of the experience” he adds.

This annual event brings together groups from Caldbeck, Cockermouth, Great Broughton, Maryport, Silloth and Wigton, and has been running for many years.
