Cumbria Scouts Media Competition!

Dear All,

I hope you’ve had a great summer?  No doubt there have been some amazing adventures, and some great stories to tell.  And that’s just what we would like you to do…

For the first time, Cumbria Scouts are running a “media competition”.  The idea is that youth members, leaders, exec., just about anyone really, tell the story of something in Scouting, either in the local paper, online, or maybe even radio or television, and hopefully win a prize for your section/group for doing so.

There are six categories in which you can enter, and the winners of each category will receive a cash prize for their section/group/unit to spend any way they wish.  All entries will be judged by a small team of journalists/photographers and me (County MDM), and winners will be chosen based upon criteria which follow the Scout Association’s “Brand Guidelines”.

The categories are:

  • Best published story about a regular section/unit meeting (print media) £50 prize;
  • Best published story about a section/group/unit off-site event/activity/camp (print media) £50 prize;
  • Best published or broadcast audio/video story about any aspect of Scouting £50 prize;
  • Best published story about youth-shaped Scouting, or engagement with the wider community (published using any publicly accessible digital media) £50 prize;
  • Best published photograph of a regular section/unit meeting £25 prize;
  • Best published photograph of an offsite event/activity/camp £25 prize.

All articles/clips/images must be published in a public arena, for example (but not limited to):

  • Local newspaper;
  • Local/regional magazine;
  • Local radio station;
  • Local/regional TV channel;
  • YouTube;
  • Twitter;
  • Open Facebook page;
  • Local exhibition or display.

Posts to Private/Secret Facebook pages or other similarly restricted social media will not be accepted as entries.

To enter the competition:

Once you have your article published, your radio/TV appearance completed, or your digital media piece uploaded, please share the full details with me via email.  Please send scans of clippings, digital copies of photos, or links to recordings/online digital media to me by email: media@cumbriascouts.org.uk

The competition begins on 1st September 2017, and entries will be accepted for events/activities taking place up until 31st January 2018.

If you are not sure how/where to submit your story for publication, headquarters have this great web page you can use to tell your story: https://stories.scouts.org.uk/  Give it a try some time, it takes all the hassle out of media work!

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions surrounding publicity and media work, especially to do with photo permissions, publications, etc. so if you have any concerns or queries, please get in touch with your MDM or me.

Good luck in developing your story, and sharing it with the wider world.  I am really looking forward to seeing and listening to some very exciting and interesting articles/videos/photos/interviews!
