On-Going Learning

As part of scouting’s commitment to ensure our leaders are equipped with the skills and knowledge required to carry out their role we have a requirement for 5 hours of learning per year. This is taken as an average over the 5 years an appointment is valid but should be spread as evenly as possible.

There is no fixed curriculum for ongoing learning and as such it can take many forms and options range from the county activity weekends covering mountain and water activities through to external courses such as Archery or Shooting. We do have a requirement for 3 pieces of training to be completed for an appointment to be renewed but these will count towards the 5 hours per year and are detailed below.

Required Training

In order to renew an appointment three specific pieces of training need to be completed and are counted towards the 5hrs per year of learning. These requirements can be completed any time in the 5 years of the appointment but it is recommended to be completed in the year prior to renewal.

Ongoing Safeguarding Training

Our commitment to safeguarding our members is important to us and as such we require all appointments to renew their knowledge on a periodic basis. This ensures that all members are aware of any changes to the law or to The Scout Association policies. In order to make this easy to complete an online Safeguarding Awareness Training course is now available. The course has been designed using the objectives, key messages and training material produced for the face-to-face delivery of the course but tailored for online delivery.

The training should take no longer than around an hour and satisfies the requirement for Scouting specific safeguarding training to be completed at least every five years. To access the course please go the members.scouts.org.uk/safeguardingonline

Ongoing Safety Training

In addition to safeguarding we are constantly reviewing our safety policies and have a requirement to complete safety training on a periodic basis. To aid this an safety training course is available for leaders that are applying for a renewal of appointment. The course has been designed using the objectives, key messages and training material produced for the face-to-face delivery of the course but tailored for online delivery.

The training should take no longer than around half an hour and satisfies the requirement for Scouting specific safety training to be completed at least every five years. To access the course please go the members.scouts.org.uk/ongoingsafety

First Aid Training

In order to ensure our members have current first aid training it is a requirement to hold a current first aid certificate at the time of gaining your wood badge or renewal of appointment. The scout association define current as a course that has been completed within the last 3 years. This means, that although there is no expiry date on a first response course, a refresher course needs to be completed in order for the appointment to be renewed.

It is not compulsory for your first aid training to be provided by scouting although many districts do arrange courses. For the courses we are aware of they are detailed on the training events page but if you are having difficulties finding a course either through scouting or externally please speak to your training advisor or local training manager.
